In fact, it is part of a study by the Matrix Foundation to identify the socio-environmental factors that influence the quality of life of the elderly. The hypothesis that the rural environment is a key factor in promoting healthy ageing is widely accepted.<\/p>\n

It has been proven that farming activities serve as a motivational force, as working the land keeps the elderly physically and mentally active. Engaging in these tasks offers profound satisfaction and tangible benefits, derived from the physical exertion and the harvest of fresh, home-grown produce. Moreover, socialisation also plays a central role in mental health and for this reason, Sober Town Council promotes various programmes and initiatives in this area.<\/p>\n

In 2000, the Social Services department proposed organising an afternoon gathering with snacks for the elderly participants of the municipal social programme.<\/p>\n

That inaugural meeting offered some appetisers such as savoury pies (empanadas<\/em>), cold meats and sponge cake with hot chocolate. Council staff served the food in the school canteen, and in keeping with Galician tradition, music and dance were an essential part of this celebration from the very beginning.<\/p>\n

Following its initial success, the festival continued to evolve. About ten years later, it adopted its current format: the afternoon snack was replaced by a professional catering service providing a full three-course lunch. Additionally, while the event was originally limited to social service users, it is now open to all senior residents of the municipality and any relatives who wish to accompany them.<\/p>\n

The Grandparents’ Festival (Festa dos Av\u00f3s<\/em>) typically takes place in April or May, depending on the annual calendar. The event begins with a Mass, followed by a communal lunch featuring live music and a prize draw. A special tribute is also paid to the oldest residents in attendance. The celebration is held at the Virxe do Carme Primary School sports centre. To ensure accessibility, the local council provides a dedicated bus service.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner]
