VIEWPOINTS: Q FOR QUALITY & S FOR SUSTAINABILITY

Sober’s network of viewpoints has been recognised with the “Q for Quality” seal awarded by the Spanish Institute for Tourism Quality (ICTE) under “Unique Public Space” category since 2021. This distinction is held by only five public spaces in all of Spain, making Sober the only municipality in both the Province of Lugo and the entire Ribeira Sacra to receive it. Furthermore, in 2024, the network obtained the “S for Sustainability” seal, demonstrating the municipality’s commitment to environmental conservation.

Sober features ten public viewpoints, the first of which dates to the 1980s. Since then, the network has been steadily expanded and restored, becoming a true benchmark for the entire region.

Nine of these viewpoints offer breathtaking views along the Sil Canyon, while the tenth is located at the confluence where the River Cabe flows into the River Sil. To help visitors explore the municipality’s ten viewpoints, we have divided the route into two sections, both easily accessible by car as follows:

Section one: From Sober to Os Chancís Pier

Starting from Sober’s town centre and heading towards Os Chancís, you will find the first three viewpoints on the route:

Section Two: Starting from Sober’s town centre and heading towards Doade you can visit the remaining seven viewpoints:

RELIGIOUS HERITAGE

Sober is home of an important religious heritage that is more modest and less known than other  areas of the Ribeira Sacra, yet of considerable historical and cultural value.

This heritage consists of a group of rural Romanesque churches, characterised by their simplicity and historical value.

In recent years, several of these churches have undergone conservation works that revealed and restored several hidden treasures, such as wall paintings that were concealed beneath layers of paint and limewash. The sanctuaries of Proendos, Lobios, and Pinol are located within a seven-kilometres radious.

Currently, the churches of Pinol and Lobios can be visited as part of the Romanesque Tour circuit organised by the Ribeira Sacra Tourism Consortium. This service offers guided access to some of the smaller and most important Romanesque churches within the Ribeira Sacra, and it is available from Easter until the end of September.

You can download here the brochure on our Romanesque churches, including visiting schedules.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL HERITAGE

Sober’s archaeological heritage includes more than forty Bronze Age rock carvings (petroglyphs). These ancient engravings serve as a gateway into the past, taking visitors on a journey back through Prehistory.

For centuries, our ancestors regarded these Galician petroglyphs as enigmatic expressions of a mythical world, a profound human attempt to explain the mysteries of reality. Today, the legendary folklore attached to these carvings adds a poetic dimension and unique charm to one of the most distinctive forms of Galician art.

Further information on these legendary stones is available on the “O Colado do Vento” cultural association website: click here

For guided tours to discover these ancient treasures first-hand with expert guides, please visit  Máis que Románico website: click here

HIKING

Located in an area of 133 square kilometres, the municipality of Sober is privileged of being set within a spectacular natural environment. The Sil Canyon is its most prominent landmark, forming the southern municipal and provincial boundary, while the River Cabe, which is equally impressive, defines the western limit.

Its natural areas are part of the Natura 2000 network and are designated as Special Areas of Conservation (SACs), due to their rich biodiversity and great potential for habitat restoration.

Undoubtedly, it is an unforgettable experience to explore trails where Mediterranean species such as cork oaks and arbutus, commonly known as strawberry trees, blend with native species including oaks, chestnut trees, heather and gorse.

If you are lucky, you may spot hidden among these forests some grey herons, storks, falcons, bats and owls, as well as wild boar, deer, common genets, wildcats, fox, squirrels among others.

Sober is a land of forests, rivers and natural areas and hideaways where flora, fauna and local communities coexist in harmony.

We all share the responsibility of ensuring this balance is preserved, by contributing to the conservation and protection of this unique environment.

While almost any track or forest path can become a hiking route, you can find below the most popular established routes for you to explore.
